Ethical Wedding Jewelry: Jewelmer Pearls

Several months ago, I talked about the importance of buying ethical wedding jewelry, especially diamonds. Not only does the average manufacturer fail to consider their business’s impact on the environment; if you buy from the wrong sources, you may end up indirectly supporting conflict in war-torn African nations. When you buy jewelry – even if you’re not getting married – it’s important that you ask the manufacturer where the jewelry is coming from, how the gems are extracted from the earth, and what the business does to preserve the environment from which the gems are from.

A few days ago, I discovered a Philippine pearl farm and jewelry company who produces the most gorgeous South Sea Pearls I have ever laid my eyes on. Jewelmer has been farming their own rare Palawan South Sea Pearls since 1979 and is one of the world’s most prominent suppliers of this precious gem. Their pearls have an excellent lustre that last a lifetime, and they are regularly purchased by European jewelers and affixed to exquisite necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. Jewelmer also has their own jewelry boutiques in high-end malls and five-star hotels in the Philippines so that we too can enjoy the beauty of these gorgeous pearls.

What makes Jewelmer such a unique company is that they go out of their way to protect the Palawan seas from pollution and other forms of environmental destruction. Unlike China-made South Sea Pearls, where poor oysters grow in polluted waters, Jewelmer’s pearl farm is eco-friendly. They make sure no living thing is endangered when they place their oysters into the water, and they do not interrupt any natural processes to create pearls. After all, these gorgeous pearls can only come from undisturbed oysters who live in a clean, well-protected environment.

One other thing Jewelmer is famous for is their Golden Palawan South Sea Pearl. These pearls aren’t artificially colored in any way – the golden luster is completely natural! The secret to producing these rare pearls is in the oyster – the gold-lipped Pinctada Maxima, which was genetically modified by Jewelmer for about a decade. The life span of a Pinctada Maxima oyster is about four to five years, and the average oyster can only produce one pearl in its entire lifetime. If it’s healthy enough, it may produce two, but most oysters can only deliver a single pearl. No wonder Jewelmer’s pearls fetch such a high price!

On to the jewelry collection! If your wedding dress is heavily embellished with some minor gold detailing, try a simple strand of gold pearls around your neck. Jewelmer’s pearls are held together by a strong silk thread, and a knot is placed in between pearls to keep them safely in place.

If there’s no room for a pearl necklace, simple pearl studs will light up your face. Jewelmer also has pearl earrings in white and black.

Pearl drop earrings are another great complement to a wedding dress.

This lovely necklace from their Jasmine collection is utterly romantic. The white blossoms are a gorgeous touch. I can just imagine this necklace cascading down a bride’s neck.

If you’re wearing a simple wedding dress, go all-out with your accessories. This stunning necklace from the Harlequin collection is just what you need to dress up your bare neck.

The Corail collection is inspired by the shape of life-giving coral reefs. This simple necklace would look lovely on a strapless wedding dress.

Jewelmer’s stunning pearls is available in the Philippines, USA, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Switzerland, and France. Click here to locate a store near you.
