Today, we got a question from a bride-to-be who’s looking to cut wedding costs by renting out a wedding dress instead of having one made. Joan writes (translation in italics):

i am planning my wedding for next year, ok lang kaya na hiniram ko lng un wedding gown ko? kase ang mahal mahal eh, i plan na nsa 80K lang un budget ng wedding all in na 100 guest. and cutting the budget for the gown will help.. if ever, san kaya may nagpaparent ng gown na mgaganda?
sana makareply ka saken. thanks and God bless you more :)

I am planning my wedding next year, would it be okay if I just rent a wedding gown? My budget for the wedding is P80,000 for 100 guests, and cutting the budget for the wedding gown will help. If ever, where can I rent a nice wedding gown? I hope you reply. Thanks and God bless you more.

Hi Joan! Thanks for writing to us. :) I tried to Google up some wedding gown rentals in Manila but these were the only links I could unearth. I think this is because are so many seamstresses around, making it very cheap to have a wedding dress made here.

Designer wedding gown rentals, for P3,000 upwards
Costumes and wedding gown rentals, P500 upwards
Geronimo’s gown rental, no price list

I do not recommend renting out a wedding dress because your selections are very limited. You can only rent one of the dresses already in stock, but what if the dresses available look like horrifying throwbacks from the 1980′s? It’s not a sure thing that you’ll find a wedding dress that comes in your size, either. Also, renting out wedding dresses is too impersonal. Sure, it will be cheap, but you won’t be able to save it and pass it onto your daughters.

If you’re looking to keep your wedding budget low by being thrifty on the wedding dress, you can head to the land of all things cheap and affordable – Divisoria! You can find very simple, ready-to-made wedding dresses at Tabora Street for as low as P2,000, And if you can’t find anything you like, you can do what one of our readers did: look for a wedding dress design online or in a amagazine and have a seamstress at Divisoria replicate it for you (see Gail’s wedding dress story).

Hope this helps! Good luck, and let us know how your search for an affordable wedding dress goes.
