Most brides imagine themselves getting married in a white wedding dress layered with tulle and taffeta. Some brides want to walk down the aisle in an authentic vintage wedding dress or a designer dress. But Julia Howe wanted a wedding dress that lights up. She was attracted to the fusion of industrial technology and fashion, and wanted a dress that reflected this without losing the traditional elegance of a wedding.

Julie asked a friend to design the dress for her, and the end result was a soft and glowing design that played along with the dress’s Victorian shape. To avoid looking like a billboard or a Christmas tree, the designer avoided flashing lights or bright spots. Instead, the dress was made of a fiber-optic fabric called Luminiex, which can light up large areas without being blinding. The lighted wedding dress had a soft glowing Luminex under-skirt with a splash of light on the bodice, which finished with feather-like tendrils on the shoulder. The dress runs on 4 AAA batteries kept in a hidden pocket under the modular skirt. The batteries were connected to a row of snaps to the interior of the dress so it can easily be removed for the daylight ceremony.

A glowing Luminex shawl was also created for the bride to wear during the bonfire.
