Remember Karl Lagerfeld’s origami headpieces from the Chanel Spring 2009 fashion show? Well it turns out that he didn’t intend for the Spring 2009 collection to be a bridal one; it just so happens that he felt like doing a minimalist, all-white collection with rich details. Yet I can’t help but associate the lovely white Chanel dresses with weddings and towering white wedding cakes. Most of us may not be able to afford a Chanel wedding dress, but who says we can’t have wedding cakes that match the ruffled edges and lacy trims of the white Chanel dresses? If you thought origami was just something you do in grade school art class, then clearly you haven’t seen the photos from Chanel’s Spring 2009 Haute Couture show. I know these have been around since March this year but I saw the photos just recently and fell madly in love with the stunning profusion of origami roses and Marie-Antoinette inspired headpieces. Then I realized how lovely these would look on a bride and her attendants, and figured some of you would appreciate the inspiration.

For this collection, Designer Karl Lagerfeld declared that bling is “so over” and found inspiration in “blank paper”. All the decor and headpieces used on the show were entirely made of paper by a Tokyo hairdresser named Katsuya Kamo. Props to Mr. Kamo for being able to hand-make a staggering 7,000 paper roses!

I imagine you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who can create origami roses for an elaborate wedding headpiece, but you can easily borrow the look DIY-style by trying out Martha Stewart’s tissue pompoms, or grabbing an origami book and playing around with the designs. There are also gorgeous headpieces from Ban.do that look almost origami-like (see no. 8).
