Chanel-inspired wedding cake

The cake itself isn’t much to look at, but you gain a better appreciation of it once you find out that it was made to look exactly like one of the Chanel white dresses and origami headpieces by Karl Lagerfield. Zombie wedding cake

A zombie wedding cake? Why not? Some people might find it a little too morbid for a wedding, but I think that as long as the cake (and the entire theme for that matter) reflects the bride and groom’s interests, they should just let them be. This wedding cake was made by Mike’s Amazing Cakes in Seattle, and features a bride and groom topper that looks exactly like the bride and groom who commissioned this confection. Even the zombies were made to match the clothes of their wedding party! If my boyfriend and I get married, I’d want a zombie wedding cake too, and we won’t be inviting relatives who’ll judge us for it.

Super Mario wedding cake

This is hands-down the best cake of 2009. Maybe this is just my bias for video games talking, but you can’t argue that this Super Mario wedding cake is well designed. It even comes with little fondant Koopa Troopas all over the tiers! Whoever commissioned this wedding cake is one cool couple.

I’m not sure who ordered this gorgeous multi-tiered Super Mario wedding cake to be made, but whoever they are, they are one cool couple. The cake is offbeat and unusual without trying too hard, and it’s very well-designed.

If you look closely at the tiers of the Super Mario wedding cake, you’ll see that a lot of attention was placed into translating the game’s visual details into fondant. The cake even comes with figurine-sized fondant recreations of Koopa Troopas.

And it only makes sense for Mario and Princess Peach to sit on the top tier!

Well it turns out that he didn’t intend for the Spring 2009 collection to be a bridal one; it just so happens that he felt like doing a minimalist, all-white collection with rich details. Yet I can’t help but associate the lovely white Chanel dresses with weddings and towering white wedding cakes. Most of us may not be able to afford a Chanel wedding dress, but who says we can’t have wedding cakes that match the ruffled edges and lacy trims of the white Chanel dresses? It’d probably be overkill to have a Hello Kitty-themed wedding with the iconic white cat decorating every inch of the room. I think what would really drive the message across, theme-wise, is to use Kitty as a centerpiece at the reception or as a decor on the wedding cake.

Wedding cupcakes are the most fashionable alternatives to the traditional tiered wedding cake. No more fussing with cutting the cake, and the guests can choose from a variety of cupcake flavors and designs to eat at the reception or to bring home with them. Not to mention that well-decorated cupcakes can serve as stand-alone decors!

But what if you have hundreds of guests at your wedding? How in the world will you serve the cupcakes to them? Wedding cupcakes are normally placed on tiered stands but you’ll need at least several of them, perhaps one on each table, and it kind of destroys the idea of the wedding cake as the center of the ceremonies.

If you’re a creative, do-it-yourself bride, you might want to forget the cupcake stand and place hundreds of cupcakes on a large cupcake tree instead! Not only is it a beautiful way to present all those wedding cupcakes; it also makes a fabulous centerpiece. The wedding cupcake tree pictured above is about six feet tall, 40 inches in diameter. Each layer is made out of half-inch, medium density fiberboard with rounded edges painted white. The whole structure rests on a Christmas tree stand and is held up by a curtain rod through holes made in the center of each layer.

Six feet of cupcake-y goodness! That definitely beats your average wedding cake. I wonder though, where would you put the cupcake tree afterwards?

Not all weddings have to attempt recreate a romantic atmosphere by covering the place with tulle and roses and using decorating cliches to death. Depending on the couple’s personality, a wedding can have the fun, playful atmosphere of a children’s birthday party. In fact, I think a fun, informal wedding is close to what the real nature of a wedding should be. A wedding, after all, is a celebration, and it’s a little hard to celebrate and let loose when you can’t quite be yourself in a very formal setting.

A couple named Ben and Kerri had a geeky, superhero-themed wedding – which is fairly surprising since most women would want the roses and the pink and would never consider having the Incredible Hulk top their wedding cake. But in honor of the Hulk, Ben wore a green tie, Kerri wore a green sash around her waist, and the couple had an Incredible Hulk-themed cake, with the Hulk and Wonder Woman on the topmost tier. I love how the cake was able to incorporated typical wedding cake designs together with the Hulk’s bright green color. A bright green cake might not look very appetizing to some guests, but I would definitely eat it just to see what kind of cake it’s made of.
