Wedding Gowns: Shades of White

Everyone knows that white is the traditional wedding gown color, but did you know that white comes in different shades? Choosing the shade of your wedding gown is almost as challenging as choosing the style of the gown itself.

Essentially, there are four different shades of white wedding gowns. There’s stark white, which is the whitest, brightest shade you can find. Diamond, silk, or natural white is about a shade darker than stark white, though looks the same as the latter in pictures. Most gowns come in diamond white since it complements a wide variety of skin tones. Ivory white has yellow undertones and looks creamy. Finally, champagne white has pink undertones though the dress looks more white than pink in pictures.

The trick to finding the shade of your wedding gown is to know your skin tone. Brides with fair skin will look great in ivory white or diamond white; stark white will just make you look washed out. If your skin has pink undertones, creamy colors will look best on you. Those with yellow undertones will look great in champagne or diamond white. Brides with dark skin will have an easier time finding a white wedding dress because most shades will complement their skin. If your skin has olive or yellow undertones though, avoid yellow-ish ivory dresses. Champagne or stark white will look wonderful on you.

Before trying out a dress in a bridal salon, make sure you ask for clean fabric swatches before making your final decision. Their sample dresses might be dirty and could appear a shade darker than its actual color.
