Wedding Gown Fabrics

Choosing the fabric for your wedding gown all depends on the style, cut, size, and drape of your dress. Since each kind of fabric is designed to produce a certain effect, a dress with the exact same style will look and feel different if you change the fabric. It could cling to your body or it could billow about you. Silk is among the most popular wedding gown fabrics, valued for its durability and elasticity, as well as its cool texture and luster. Silk threads are woven together with others to produce satin; for those who find pure silk satin too expensive, a blend of silk and rayon is a great alternative. Silk is also used to produce more lightweight, airy fabric like tulle and chiffon. These are usually used to create layers for the wedding gown skirt.
Here are some other popular fabrics used in high quality wedding gowns today:
Brocade - A rich, decorative fabric that often includes colored silk threads. The heaviness of the fabric and its ornamental features make brocade appropriate for colder weather and formal weddings.
Satin - Most wedding gowns are made out of this material. Satin is a high-luster fabric made out of a combination of silk, nylon, polyester, or cotton threads. What makes it appealing to brides is its cool surface and glossy finish.
Chiffon - Chiffon is used for overskirts, sheer wraps, or sleeves rather than for the gown itself. That’s because this fabric is transparent and light, with a soft finish.
Taffeta - This is a crisp, high-end fabric with a subtle ribbing. Like most material used for wedding gowns, taffeta also contains silk fibers and has a lustrous surface.
Rayon - Rayon is a comfortable, versatile fabric that has a similar texture to silk. This is one of the best material to use in tropical climates since it is absorbent and does not insulate body heat.
