Fitting Your Wedding Dress

Women don’t come in the same shapes, and it goes without say that every wedding dress is going to need some alterations. Alterations can be as simple as shortening the hem or trimming down the waist, and it can get as detailed as tucking in the bodice, shortening the sleeves, or adding lace and beads. You’ll need around two or three fittings before your wedding day; depending on how complicated the alterations will be, more fittings may be necessary.
The first fitting should happen about six weeks before the wedding. During the first fitting, you need to make sure of two things: that your gown is the right size, design, and color, and that your couturier knows what he or she is doing. The couturier should already be looking for places which parts of your dress needs to be shortened, lengthened, or altered. While this is happening, examine how the material falls, the stitches, how the chest area fits, etc. This is the time for you to be demanding and make any changes you want.
During the second fitting, bring along your lingerie, shoes, jewelry, and other accessories yo plan to wear on the big day. If you’re not sure what accessories to wear, you can bring a bunch a long to see how each looks with your dress. Also, make sure that the concerns you raised during the first fitting have been addressed.
On the day of your final fitting, bring your bridesmaid or your mom along with you. Some couturiers will provide you with an assistant who will help you wear your wedding dress on the day itself. For those who do not, your mom or bridesmaid will have to learn about your dress, especially if it has complicated straps. When the final fitting is done, schedule a date within two weeks of the wedding day to pick up the gown. On that day, try the gown one last time, especially if it’s been weeks since your last fitting.
