Barbie’s Wedding Dresses
Fashion designers just love dressing up Barbie, and there is no shortage of wedding couturiers who jump in at the chance to deck her in white for her big day. Monique Lhuillier and Vera Wang are just some of the biggest names in fashion to play dress up with the famous doll, but did you know that Barbie has been ready to walk the aisle since she first came out?

The Barbie doll first came out in 1959 and that same year, this wedding dress became available for her to wear. The white satin wedding gown has a sweetheart neckline, a long-sleeved bodice made out of silver-glitter accented tulle, and a double-tiered skirt with a floral cathedral train. The wedding dress set came with a white tulle veil, white open-toe pumps, Barbie’s mother’s pearls for “something old, a blue garter for “something blue”, and short white gloves.

Barbie’s designer wedding dresses are rare collectible items today. One of the most notable collectible dolls is the commemoration of Elizabeth Taylor’s role in the 1950’s flick, Father of the Bride. Here, Barbie wears an authentic replica of Elizabeth Taylor’s wedding dress in the film – a lace and satin bodice that expands to a full satin skirt. The skirt splits in front to reveal a lacey underskirt. The floor-length tulle veil has scalloped lace-trim accents, and she comes with faux pearl earrings and a gold-painted wedding band on her finger.

Notice how Barbie’s face changes over the decades? The Barbie dolls of today have bigger eyes, probably to compete with Bratz dolls. I think this makes her look more endearing. Carolina Herrera designed this radiant and romantic ecru-corded lace gown in 2005. The wedding dress has a criss-crossed bodice, a satin-edged organza ribbon, and comes with an off-white veil edged with lace and embellished with pearls. If you look closely you’ll see that there’s a blue ribbon decorating her shoes.

The bustled train on Barbie’s satin wedding gown by Reem Acra is too beautiful for words. It’s adorned by intricate embroidery and beading that must have taken hours to do on such a tiny little wedding dress! The wedding dress is complemented by a sheer body suit with long sleeves, and a sleek updo creates an elegant feel to the overall look.

Last year, Mattel released a replica of Elvish and Priscilla Presley on their May 1, 1967 wedding. The Priscilla doll is dressed in a white gown, veil, and a rhinestone tiara, while the king of rock n’ roll walks the aisle in a black brocade suit with a white flower boutonniere.
